Daoulas Abbey
The Abbey of Daoulas has the rare privilege of concentrating in one place all the main interests:
the charm of the gardens and their botanic diversity, the heritage quality of the site and the unique opportunity of discovering other cultures thanks to the annual exhibitions.
A former monastery governed since the 12th century by the regular canons of the order of Saint-Augustin, the Daoulas Abbey has preserved beautiful traces of its initial magnificence: a 12th century abbey church (now a parish church), a Romanesque cloister and its remarkable basin, a fountain and a 16th century oratory. Exceptional gardens, including the jardin des simples featuring species representative of traditional pharmacopoeias from all five continents, make your visit even more enjoyable.
The Daoulas Abbey park is transforming !
Parks and gardens form a heritage that changes with the seasons, as it has over the centuries. In 2015, a major renovation of the Daoulas Abbey park began. The project consists in the creation of a garden of medicinal trees, echoing the jardin des simples, founded in the 1990s. The garden will feature a selection of trees and shrubs from all around the world.
The various plant species will reflect the diversity of the pharmacopoeias created by human societies according to their relationship with the human body and diseases, their beliefs and scientific knowledge, as well as the resources provided by their environment.
